People go on holiday because they want to forget the mundane busy office or business schedule. They want to enjoy and rejuvenate themselves. If you spend your vacation visiting Spain, you will not only forget your office or business, you will forget yourself. This is because Spain is full of places worth visiting. One such place is the Cantabria which is very near the port city of Santander.

Brief history of Santander:
The moderately hot Santander was a part of the Roman Empire. The Spanish King Alfonso XIII chose this place as a summer resort. Those who visit this city will find that the culture and religious practices of different civilizations are being practiced here even to this day. That shows the influence these civilizations have left on the people here.

Places of interest in Santander:
Today, this city is bustling with many flourishing business activities. The city hall, known as the Ayuntamiento, is located in the center of the city. This modern building and the places around it is the most ideal place for shopping. Just around this place is the San Fransisco Church; it is a religious as well as a historic place. A little farther away, on Cervantes Street, there is a museum called the ‘Biblioteca Cassa Museo.’ In fact it was the house of Biblioteca and he resided in that house; it has been converted into a museum and library of the famous writer Marcelino Pelayo. Afterwards, you can visit the historic cathedral, La Cripta Cristo. Just a few minutes’ drive will take the tourist to the ferry station or Estacion Maritima. Adjacent to this is the famous park called the Pereda. Just plan to take the ferry to Malaga to taste the traditional food while looking at the beautiful sea and enjoying the seaside life.

Do not forget to visit the Paseo de Pereda, a building believed to have been built in the 17th Century which was the headquarters of Banco Santander. The famous arch and the two arches are the other places worth visiting. It is believed that this is the center of the city and it is from this place that the city started to grow.

There are many other places worth visiting. The tourist guides will help you plan your itinerary. They will arrange for your stay. There are many apartments and villas that offer comfortable accommodations. Of course there are plenty of restaurants too to serve the choicest food.

Food in Spain is far more then a unique way of keeping soul and body together -- and it is a complete experience and the central point of the Spanish way of living. But most of the overseas visitors have not been able to experience the real taste of Spanish food since most of the coastal area's and tourist places in Spain are saturated with international restaurants supporting international cuisines and fast food joints. Because of this reason, the Spanish food has never been able to acquire an international reputation and therefore most of the tourists that flock here, find the menu options to be limited.

The food of Spain reflects the turbulent history of this vast country, its diverse geography and the Mediterranean culture. Spain had remained in the occupational control of the Moors for a long time that started oranges and olive plantation here. Oranges and olives made a huge impact on the diet of Spaniards and these fruits are still very popular in Spain. Moorish influence can be tasted in a wide variety of Spanish dishes that if flavored using saffron, cumin and different other exotic spices. The sumptuous stews and soups constitute the staple diet of peasant community. Olive oil is still the preferred choice for cooking in Spain.

Paella is considered to the most famous of all Spanish food and it was invented by a poor peasant of the Valencia. The original recipe involves use of homegrown vegetables that are finely cut and cooked with short grains of good quality rice. It is a cheap recipe that is full of fillings and flavors. As a rule, tasty food in Spain is available for cheap prices to and in the street markets and made from quality local produce.
The region of Costa del Sol is known for famed for the grilled sardines that are barbecued its beaches during the summer month. Gazpacho (chilled tomato soup) is famous in Andalucia. Eating here is a delight with a serving tapas being done with every drink. Traditionally, tapa (meaning cover) is served absolutely free with a drink. You need to explore real Spain in order to experience Spanish Flavor.

Madrid, the jewel of Spain

When we speak of Spain, the first city that comes to our mind is ‘Madrid’- the great city with many places of interest for every class of visitor; great museums, palaces, churches, etc. This is a city that should be visited at least once in a lifetime. Some of the places of interest in Madrid are briefly explained here:

The Royal palace:

It took about 32 years to build this palace and it was completed in the year 1770. The palace was designed by Mr. Sabatini, the architect from Italy for the King His Excellency Felipe V. It has a great collection of paintings of artists like Goya, Caravaggio and Velázquez. This is one of the most imposing buildings with luxury at its pinnacle. This palace is an architectural marvel. Apart from paintings, the palace also has a collection of many silver and golden articles, jewels, etc. It has a collection of many medals presented to His Excellency. Perhaps the king had fascination for music, he collected many musical instruments and these instruments are also on display. Porcelain and glass wares are also on display. The king had a separate dispensary for him and his family and other members of the palace. A royal library with collection of great literary works shows the concern of His Excellency towards spreading literature. It is certainly a place which should never be missed.

Torres KIO:

This 27 floor building is built of metal, granite and glass. The building which leans at a particular angle is named after the company which constructed this most spectacular building. Of course, its official name is Puerta de Europa which means gateway to Europe. This building was completed in 1996. Most renowned architects John Burgee and Philip Johnson have designed this building. Maybe this building can be called the leaning tower of Madrid. This is a high security area and the building is not open to public. But one can view it from outside and enjoy its architectural marvel.

Parque del Buen Retiro:

It takes almost one full day to go around this beautiful park, spreading over about 118 hectares which is said to have been built in the 18th century. It has a place for boating and it also houses three great museums. Come holiday, the park will be overflowing with people and artists like singers, painters, astrologers, etc. Puppet shows are also held. This is the best place to relax and enjoy the beautiful environment.
